What are Vortex Flow Meters? Vortex flow meters are the devices used to measure the flow rate and velocity of fluids–liquids, gases, and steam. They detect the frequency of vortices shed from a bluff body placed in the flow stream, a phenomenon known as the von Karman effect. The vortex shed frequency is directly proportional to the velocity of the fluid, which allows for accurate flow measurement. The vortex flow meters can measure volumetric flow, and with additional sensors, mass flow and energy flow.
